Michele D. | Employee | NYS Information Technology Services | Albany
I have been bringing a large thermos with a few orange, lemon, or lime slices inside. When I get to work, I fill it with cold water and pour it into my tea mug to drink while I am working. I aim to finish the thermos by the end of my workday. I end the day with a nice cup of chamomile tea with honey to relax and get ready for rest.

Last week, I cut my screen time and finally read a book that I’ve been trying to finish for months. This program has given me a wonderful incentive toward a healthier lifestyle.

Ebony B. | Employee | Department of Motor Vehicles | Yonkers
This week’s challenge was refreshing as I was able to reset my focus and concentrate on my goals. I didn’t pick up a book to read. I did pick up my sketch book and started working on a few upcoming event designs. I love how clear my head feels.

This was an easy challenge since I’m on three computer screens all day for work. I opt to read paper books to escape the computer screens. I do this with hard copies of crossword puzzles, Sudoku as well. It’s better all around.
Peggy D. | Employee | Office of Children and Family Services | Valhalla
From Sunday, 1/19/25 through Sunday 1/26/25, I turned the notifications off from my social media. I put my phone on silent so that text and email notifications only vibrated. I screened the urgency through my smart watch and was able to complete reading two and half books during my down time.

In two days, I read Never Lie, by Frieda McFadden. It was a great book and I highly recommend it. When you have a good book, it’s easy to take that break from screen time and get your head in a book. Hooray!

I couldn’t give up coffee, but I did not drink any alcohol and only had two sodas.
Lavada N. | Employee | Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation | Albany
I abstained from drinking alcohol from Sunday through Thursday. As a former wine and spirits writer, I enjoy drinking but wanted to limit my intake. I already decided to not drink on “school nights” following days when I had to go to work. The challenge added an incentive. I found I slept better and had a bit more energy in the mornings. This is a habit I will continue.
John M. | Employee | SUNY- Empire State University | Saratoga Springs
No alcohol this week. No soda consumed this week. Although I did not abstain from caffeine, I am trying half-caf coffee.
Sharon V. | Employee | Department of Health | Albany
Being mindful of what we are drinking, and how much rest we are getting is so important. This challenge helped me recognize that making healthy swaps for alcohol not only helps eliminate "empty" calories but also enjoying better choices during events with friends and having a more peaceful weekend of rest. Taking away unnecessary caffeine throughout the day helped to find a better balance over the weekend to be more present with my family.
Patty G. | Employee | SUNY – Upstate Medical Center | Syracuse
This one small change of concentrating on drinking more water and abstaining from caffeine made my body feel better. On December 1, 2010, I started my weight loss journey. In two years. I lost 120 pounds and have kept it off for two plus years now; it's the best I've felt in a long time!! This challenge helped make me aware of getting back to drinking more water. (Decaffeinated tea is a great substitution as well.)
Peggy D. | Employee | Office of Children and Family Services | Valhalla
I have not had soda since 01/01/2025. I had one cup of coffee on 01/11/2025 but none before then. I had one glass of wine on 01/12/2025 but no other alcohol before then.

My husband and I completed the first two weeks of the WellNYS Weekly Challenges; don’t skip physical activity, choose a time, and commit to it, and abstain from alcohol. I learned to dance! This month, I have completed a year of weekly classes. Before starting, since I haven't danced before, I had a fear of dancing, fear of being judged, what people would think, and the fear of one's own worst critic, oneself. So, last year, without a dance partner, I decided to take the leap and sign-up. Now, I can hear the beat and move in sync with the music. Just that alone was a burning desire for me to know. In addition to that throughout this year, I have learned Salsa, Merengue, Cha-Cha, and Jive; the best part is the social confidence that it has instilled in me. To fellow people seeking to dance but have a fear of doing it, just sign-up and take it one step at a time (pun intended).
Andrea R. | Employee | Office of Medicaid Inspector General | New York
I did it! I maintained patience and found a peace of mind. There is nothing more powerful than having a workspace suitable for you. New beginnings are wonderful, and I highly recommend you take the necessary time to find yours. With so many opportunities in place, there is no need to remain stagnant. It's your time as it was mine.
Jose B. | Employee | Office of Information Technology Services | Rochester
My wife and I became vegans due to several serious health issues. I still have lingering health issues (some will never go away) but the good news is, I’m taking less medication per doctor's advice. Also, exercising more now per doctor's encouragement. Nothing is perfect but being on a vegan diet is helping me.
Ester R. | Employee | SUNY Maritime College | Bronx
In the fall of 2021, as I approached my 60th year of life, I sought a connection with myself that had eluded me for decades. I enrolled in a Mindful Leadership Certificate Program, one of many excellent programs in the SUNY's Center for Professional Development. As I learned mindfulness and meditation, I ended 2021 with a sense of wellness and self-confidence I never felt before. Now I manage whatever life sends my way by breathing deep and going within. I am so grateful!
Brittni Y. | Employee | Office of Attorney General | Albany
Since the beginning of the month, I have used smaller plates to portion out food. I have also filled most of all my plates of veggies, fruits, and fewer carbs. I have also set goals to walk at least 10,000 steps and use the stairs more often than normal. I can say I have lost 10 pounds and feel better every day.

NYS DMV hosted a "Move the Scale Monday" eight-week weigh-in program. We had participants from the Capital Region, Long Island, Hudson Valley, and Metro offices participate in this spring program. They received weekly emails and handouts, the option to weigh-in in person or remotely and were rewarded with some great giveaway items for participating. We had a great turnout with great feedback for future offerings. NYS DMV will be hosting another wellness program in the early fall.
Robin M. | Employee | NYS Office of Attorney General – Criminal Division
I started an exercise program, that's helping me mentally, physically, and emotionally. Also, I'm reading various books twice a week.
Matthew M. | Employee | Department of Labor | Albany
In one month, I logged one hundred miles and participated in a local challenge to do so. More recently I have been following the Wellness Daily regardless of how simple or small the suggestion is. For me, my most recent accomplishment is.... making my bed! If you are wondering where, the June calendar has it on there and this is a huge accomplishment for me. Thanks EAP network.
Matthew M. | Employee | Department of Labor | Albany
I completed a half marathon and 100 miles of running in the Month of March. I also completed the June Wellness Motivation to make my bed daily!
Matthew M. | Employee | Department of Labor | Albany
I completed 100 miles running in March of 2023 with a long run of nearly a marathon of 17 miles. Aside from completing my MBA in just two years, this is right up there with my biggest accomplishments. Thanks EAP and DOL.
Matthew M. | Employee | Department of Labor | Albany
I ran 100 miles as a challenge in the month of March 2023. It was a challenge issued by a local mayor (Wildwood Crest) and I started a few days later than I will in the future. I ended up completing it just in time with a 17-mile run, my longest ever to complete the 100 miles. There were prizes, but the most rewarding aspect was knowing that it was all for fun. Seeing the season change and getting to know the locals was also amazing. Of course, keeping the purple Department of Labor ribbons in mind helps too. Thanks!
Stephanie J. | Employee | Office of Information Technology Services | Albany
My partner and I are going to be vegetarian for the month of January.

Lynette | Employee | Office of Mental Health |Albany
In the spring of 2013, I set a goal to run a marathon. The journey has been challenging, taking pauses many times. I never ran more than 5K at one time and couldn't complete that without walking portions of the runs. In early 2020 I signed up for a half marathon and started training. When COVID hit, i stopped all physical exercise and found myself in worse physical shape than ever. Spring 2021 I received an email that my half marathon registration was credited, and I signed up. I started my training, telling myself and family I didn't think I could do it but since I already paid, I might as well try. Thanks to many people changing the way I talked to myself, I was able to not only complete my training, but I also completed a few smaller races (getting my 5K time down to just over 30 minutes), and finally the half marathon in October 2021. This was a great milestone on my way to the marathon, fall 2022, which I am registering for now. Never give up on those dreams!
Lori M. | Employee | Office for People with Developmental Disabilities | Norwich
Walked 20 minutes on a treadmill every day last week!
Kevin M. | Employee | Office for People with Developmental Disabilities | POK
The goal I set for myself was to 1) be off medications, 2) develop healthy eating style, 3) lose weight, and 4) purge all negativity from my surroundings (work, private and leisure) that may cause disruptions for me. DONE...!
Beryl J. | Employee | SUNY | Albany
During the continuing global pandemic and the actualization on our campuses for the calls of racial justice, I started writing in a Gratitude Journal. Gratitude and Thanks are two of my favorite words. Writing every day at the same time has allowed me to reflect on my day and give thanks for the small and big wins. I am also on a healthy lifestyle journey...so far, 10 pounds and looking forward to more.
Samantha S. | Employee | Department of Motor Vehicles | Syracuse
I ran my first 5K back on July 24th, 2021, after giving birth to my son in April 2021! Ran the Chocolate Challenge with my of children! Ran it in 49.51! Not bad at all! Walking/running almost every day to get ready for the next 5K with my kids!
Rochelle F. | Employee | Department of Corrections and Community Supervision | Auburn
I had a baby in October 2020 and sticking to a good diet while exercising at least 3-4 times a week I am almost back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I feel overall better and have so much more energy when I eat good food. It's not easy to try and find time to exercise when you have little ones, so I use babe to help me work out and she loves it. Holding her while doing squats, doing arm extensions, and over head press. And now that it's getting nicer outside I strap her to my chest and walk outside with her. It hasn't been easy but if you stick to it you will see results and feel great!
Jeanne L. | Employee | Department of Labor | Poughkeepsie
Ran the 2021 West Point Fallen Comrades half marathon on March 27, 2021

I like to believe that there really is a silver lining in every cloud, sometimes you just have to look a little harder to find it. COVID has brought many changes to our workplace and our society. Some of these changes will no doubt be permanent, while others we are waiting for them to fade away, allowing us to return to some sense of "normal". I made a choice to use the time away from family, friends, travel, dining out, and other things that make up my "normal" to address a long standing problem...weight loss. This journey began at 426 lbs., type two diabetes, and a fairly sedentary lifestyle. I started with a plan that included portion awareness and food tracking for accountability. I slowly added exercise to my daily routine and read the daily message from NYSWellness everyday to help start my day with positive thinking. Gradually I increased my exercise and the pounds began to drop. Soon my clothes were fitting loosely and my blood sugar level was below the diabetic threshold. To date I have lost about 100 lbs., about halfway through this journey, with about 100 lbs. yet to go. I am confident that I will reach this goal and look forward to taking back even more of my life that was lost to obesity. So far I am back to playing golf, even walking the course most of the time, kayaking, and I have begun hiking with my Welsh Pembroke Corgi puppy. The silver lining in this cloud was there, I just had to look a little harder to find it.

Over the course of the last year, 2020, I was able to lose about 90 pounds. Going from 265 to 175 while working from home during COVID. I built a desk in my spare time to sit over top of my treadmill and worked while walking for a few hours each day and watched what I was eating and the pounds just shed away.
Margaret B. | Employee | SUNY | Buffalo
I did my first Buffalo Turkey Trot and did it virtual during COVID 19 so I was away from everyone and safe. I wanted to stop so many times but I finished. I did the first mile in 18 minutes but leveled off to about a 20 minute mile. Not bad for a pacer dependent, overweight person who didn't train. Next year I will do better!
Amanda R. | Employee | SUNY | Canton
My family and I completed the Tupper Lake Triad this past summer and the Saranac 6er Hiking Challenge in October! My children are 9 and 14; we were so proud of this accomplishment for our whole family!
Kory W. | Employee | Office of Mental Health | Albany
I built a raised loose stone patio with around 4 yards of crusher run for a base, 4 yards of size 2 marble rock for decoration, and 3 pallets of flat stone for the retaining wall. I then built a 55 inch fire pit out brick. For seating I put together 2 Adirondack swinging chairs and stained them. It is a small Oasis.

I have quit smoking and lost 8 pounds since starting at OPWDD in August of 2018! I have started eating better and exercising and have 60 more pounds to go to get to my weight loss goals and maintenance. In July of 2019, I spent a week with a small group bicycling in the French Alps. We tackled a number of the famous Tour de France climbs; including the Col de la Colombiere, Col des Aravis, Col des Saisies, Col de la Madeleine, Col du Télégraphe, the mighty Galibier pass and finishing on the famous Alpe d’Huez. By the end of the week, I had cycled nearly 300 miles and climbed 45,000 ft of vertical gain. I felt so fit upon my return to the USA, that I entered and completed 3 bicycle races later in the summer and finished top 3 in my age group in two of the races!

Since I volunteer as a firefighter in my spare time I have made fitness a priority. This year I ran a "duty gear challenge" and ran 4 miles of hilly terrain in Sharon Springs with my full set of firefighting gear on. The gear adds approximately 30 lbs reduces mobility and holds in heat and sweat but I made it without having to stop and rest.
Emelina G. | Employee | Department of Labor | New York City
I ran the NYC half marathon in March 2019 and on Saturday June 29, 2019, I ran 5 miles at the Front runners Pride run.

Joined Weight Watchers on April 2, 2019. As of June 18th, I have shed 65.6 pounds all through basically following the plan, tracking my food, and walking. I do a minimum of 10,000 steps per day, but try for 13,000 - 20,000. I have been tracking my eating for over 75 days and the change has been remarkable.

Every year my daughter and I participate in the Freihofer's Race for Women 5K in Albany. She's 24 years year's old and lives in Colorado now, but is committed to running this event with her mom. We also have my step daughter doing it as well. It's a wonderful event for women! It's empowering for women of all ages. The best was watching the daughter, mother, grandmother and the 88 year old great-grandmother take part.

I set my Fitbit to 7,100 steps per day which is approximately 3 miles for me. I've hit this goal at least 4 days per week and would like to hit it 7 days. It's a great way to motivate me to move.
Patti B. | Employee | Department of Financial Services | Albany
I am carefully watching my carbs intake, have a light yogurt, and piece of fruit with lunch daily. I also include a 100 calorie snack for that afternoon slump time - such as raisins, granola bar, apple or a halo mini orange. Doing this all the time has now become a habit. I rescued a dog last July, so I'm out walking our dog a lot on weekends and evenings.
Amy N. | Employee | Office for People with Developmental Disabilities | Perrysburg
I am a new employee and wanted to share that I have been making healthy lifestyle changes since November, 2018. Part of that change was to find employment with an agency that really cares about its people. I have found it with 'the state.' Since joining OPWDD I have started to realize how stressed out I was working at my other job as a school bus driver. I am thrilled to learn that this program is available to me as an employee and for my family. I will continue to monitor my stress and health as I embark on my new career as an OA1; I have lost nearly 50 lbs since November 21, 2018 and I plan to take full advantage of the motivational and fitness opportunities offered on this page.
Heather | Employee | SUNY | Potsdam
In 2018 I lost a total of 25 pounds! I have cut down on the amount of food I eat at each meal and switching to the right portion sizes has improved my weight loss goals. We are now in 2019 and I am still actively loosing the weight and may eventually reach the size I was way back in high school!
Linda E. | Employee | Office of Employee Relations | Albany
I participated in the Runner's World Running Streak from Thanksgiving 2018 - New Years Day 2019 with my son. The streak was to run one mile per day. I've run for over 35 years, but never ran every single day. I truly enjoyed it and will continue this into 2019! Here are a few things that changed: I looked forward to doing it daily, it only took between 9 - 11 minutes, so there was no excuse not to do it. I got in shape and am able to run easier than when I wasn't running every day. My 20-year-old son and I did it together, he completed it too!
Linda C. | Employee | SUNY | Syracuse

I joined the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program offered through my job. It is a partnership to support locally grown farm fresh produce. What I get in return is the excitement of new and different produce each week, trying new delicious recipes offered by email, and the satisfaction that I am eating more vegetables, and trying a larger variety of vegetables. This is the first time I've cooked and enjoyed swiss chard, okra, and tomatillos. As an added bonus, I am seeing some weight loss by eating healthier.
Jody W. | Employee | Office for People with Developmental Disabilities | Gorham

I started walking on my breaks, tracking my intake, increasing my water intake (no soda!!!) and even worked up to jogging during my lunches. Since then I have run my first 5K, donated my entire wardrobe to charity and dropped over 100 lbs!!! Working to lose another 20 or so pounds but with God's help I will achieve my goal.

Nanette B. | Employee | Department of Taxation and Finance | Albany
I was happy to complete the GOLD medal! I loved the challenges and looked forward to achieving a new goal each day, including the weekends. On one challenge, I cleaned up an area around my home (which is out in the beautiful countryside surrounding our state's capital). There was a hamper of clean linens that my son had brought back from college. As I was sorting through the nicely-folded towels and sheets, I was startled to see a little twitchy nose, and then 2 more... I'd discovered a nest of 3 baby mice snuggled into the nice, warm linens...I was (proudly) restrained and "enlisted" my husband's aid in dispatching the family to the far-away, outdoors. Needless to say, all of the linens have been disposed of - I could NOT use "the mouse-house" linens in my home! With that experience alone, I am THRILLED that I took the challenge and was challenged each day to better myself and my surroundings. I am looking forward to our next challenge, too!
Marion | Employee | Office of Children and Family Services | Rensselaer
I enjoyed the Olympic Experience and some of them were challenging but I tried it anyway and was a good learning experience of what I can accomplish if I put my mind to it. Some of points I can also use in the future.
Francesca R. | Employee | Department of Labor | Albany
I accomplished the bronze medal. I wore a suit to work every day for one week (including Friday); I told myself I could do anything because it is God who strengthens. I gave sincere compliments to my friends and family while at the Gospel Jubilee. I haven't stopped; I finished making all of the mini tissue holders for the women in my Bible Book Study; I started a bucket list; I worked on a few activities and didn't let anything distract me during that time (closing the door to my home office helped); Found really nice quotes and poetry that make me feel good about if I danced all night at a friend's wedding; I've been drinking my Sassy Water every day; I cleaned, and waxed my car; and I helped out at a church activity (Vacation Bible School). Looking back, much was accomplished, and I'm proud of myself, and I thank God for giving me the strength to do them.
Sharon W. | Employee | Department of Taxation and Finance | Albany

I have lost 194 lbs. I started going to Weight Watchers and then EAP offered Zumba classes at work so I joined those. They were so much fun they did not feel like exercise at all. (Well, ok maybe a little LOL) Then joined a gym. After I lost most of the weight the Olympic Experience came out and I love it. It reminds me what my goals are and I am pretty sure I have done every month since the beginning. It helps me stay on track and stay fit. In March it will be a year since I met my weight loss goal and the Olympic Experience and Zumba classes at work is a big part of what helps me stay at my goal weight. I really appreciate the work that our EAP staff (DEB) does to offer this to us! It literally changed my life and gave me more years to live.

I've lost a total of 94 lbs. so far. I drastically changed my diet and I do 30-120 mins of exercise a day. I use stairs always, walk during my breaks at work, elliptical at home or go hiking. I choose standing over sitting whenever I can. My new lifestyle has positively inspired my dad and sister-in-law to take charge of their personal health. My dad has lost 80+ lbs. and my sister-in-law has lost 120+ lbs. I am very proud of them!
Francesca R. | Employee | Department of Labor | Albany
I am part of the "Weigh-In-Wednesday" (WIW) group, held at the Labor Department. I get encouraged, each time, to lead a healthier lifestyle through eating, exercising, meditation, etc. I have also formed great friendships with folks I normally would not have spoken with. We all have a common goal...to be healthy. I hope this program continues because it is makes us accountable for our actions, is empowering, and, guest what??? It's only $10 for 10 weeks. The WIW is a WOW!!!
Danielle H. | Employee | Department of Labor | Albany

Thanks to our EAP Coordinator for making it fun!!

The Weigh-In-On-Wednesday program at the Department of Labor is a great program. I started my weight loss journey prior to the beginning of this program but during the most recent program I lost 29.5 pounds bringing my total weight loss to 66 pounds. Deb did a great job organizing this program. It was a lot of fun and helped keep me motivated.
Marcia Z. | Employee | Department of Labor | Albany
I participated in the "Weigh in on Wednesday" program since it began at labor. the info was useful & the various books we were given helped a great deal in eating right, how to prepare various foods, etc. Deb (our EAP rep.) even brought in foods so we could taste them. I tried, but I still don't like hummus. I lost about 43 pounds since the program started and I did it because this program was easy to follow and got my competitive drive going since I was competing for prizes. this is the most weight I ever lost.
Amanda R. | Employee | SUNY | Canton
We just finished a 10-week weight loss program at work. Our biggest "loser" Michelle O. lost 22.6 pounds in 10 weeks!
Anne W. | Employee | SUNY | Syracuse
I've lost over 100 pounds and am still losing! What a huge different in my life in so many ways. Even better than looking better and new clothes is feeling healthy again and being able to do activities that my weight prevented me from doing before.
Kimlee M. | Employee | Office of Employee Relations | Albany
Three months ago, my blood sugars were in the diabetic range, my cholesterol and triglycerides were too high. I eat healthy and have never been a soda drinker but...I wasn't exercising. Over the winter I got a used treadmill and started walking. I could only do a few minutes at a time but eventually increased to 30 minutes. Not a marathon but a big success for me. This week when I went for a follow up with my doctor the test results showed that my sugars are back in the normal range, my cholesterol is 169, and triglycerides 83! I've lost about 20 pounds. The weight loss is great but the healthy test results are even better!

I quit beating myself up for the weight I put on last year after dropping 63 pounds over three years. I started exercising again between 20 - 30 minutes after dinner daily and walking my dogs every morning before work. I can't wait to get outside more this spring and summer! I am concentrating more on feeling better and eating healthy foods rather than unhealthy sugary foods.

Challenged myself to adopt a new eating lifestyle. I started with a plan of 2 weeks no carbs and very limited natural sugars (Stevia in the raw, honey, or agave) today is day 14 and I am so proud of myself! I stuck with it and even managed to pack healthy no-carb meals while being on the road for my job. A little challenging but manageable. My clothes are so lose that I had to move buttons over and take seams in. I was even able to pull out some of my clothes from the back of the closet...you know, the ones you save in hopes of getting into them "someday". And it sure feels great to be able to move without having lots of pain!

On my "Make it a Brain Teasing Day", for the first time in several months, I used my favorite brain games website. Our whole family has an account and we enjoy challenging each other to the next level. Since then I have logged in several times a week to train my brain and I have already felt an improvement in my attention and focus. And I feel more productive at work.

For the "Make it a brain teasing day" I logged on to my Lumosity family account for the first time in several months and ever since I've been logging in several times a week to train my brain. I've noticed an improvement with my attention span and memory and I've felt more productive at work. I highly recommend Lumosity.

I have been working on changing my lifestyle, more activity and eat healthier. I've lost weight (41 lbs.) and I am no longer diabetic, cholesterol is now perfect and my blood pressured has lowered. My goal is to get off of all medication and not be a diabetic. I have reached one goal, and now working on the BP goal. I want to live longer and be healthier to be here for my family and my friends.

I made a list of 5 people I am grateful for and I let them know why. Thank you for encouraging us to do this; the responses I received let me know how much it meant to them. I will incorporate this activity into my routine more often; it costs me only a few minutes of thought & typing to pour out blessing into the lives of others.

My children are now asking to exercise during the commercials when we watch TV together. They loved doing it with me the one day and are hooked. It's been fun to do this activity together.

I bring healthy choices to eat every day at work. This method to healthy eating has not only allowed me to lose unwanted weight but to improve my digestive system. Having healthy choices at work keeps me from eating unhealthy snacks and meals.

Did mind puzzles instead of watching TV or being on the internet search or chat lines for at least 3 hours a day. Mainly ate one serving of meat a day. Did more walking when it was just as easy to catch the bus. Supportive to co-workers and friends when I could.

Walking, taking the stairs, and getting a good night’s sleep. I make sure to take my supplements daily, eat healthy food, and watch my intake of sugar. Even though I have always been aware of healthy living, this experience has heightened my desire to continue to strive for wellness.

I have been exclusively taking the stairs every day since Jan 6th. Sometimes it is only once or twice a day; other times it is 7-8 times a day. It is getting easier to take them.
